Kamadgiri is the main holy place of Chitrakoot. The Sanskrit word 'Kamadgiri' means the mountain which fulfills all desires. The place is believed to have been the abode of Lord Ram, Sita and Laxman during their exile. The pilgrimage path around this hill is about 5 km. long, built by Pratap Kunwari, the Queen of Bundela King Maharaja Chhatrasal in 1725.

It is the most beautiful bathing ghat of the Payaswini river, believed capable of absolving a person from all sins. Lord Ram bathed here with Laxman and Sita Ji on their arrival in Chitrakoot. Saint-poet Tulsidas also lived here and is believed to have had darshan of Ram and Laxman at this very spot.

The famous temple of Mattagajendreshwar is situated on the Ramghat. According to a Pauranik legend, Brahma offered penance here in Satyug and founded a Shivling as Kshetrapal. When Sri Ram came to Chitrakoot, He performed Rudrabhishek here. Much later, Raja Aman Singh of Panna built a temple here.

This is the convergence point of three rivers — the Payaswini, the Mandakini and the Gayatri. Lord Ram performed the pitra tarpan ceremony of his father King Dashrath here. It is believed that even the King of Teerths, Prayagraj, comes once every year to absolve himself by taking a dip here.

This beautiful Kund is situated on the left bank of the Payaswini. 'Janaki' — the daughter of Raja Janak — is another name of Sita Ji, who used to bathe here during their exile. The rocks nearby bear the foot prints of Janaki Ji. The area also houses the Janaki Kund Eye Hospital and the Raghuvir Temple.

'Sphatik' means a crystal in Sanskrit. There is a huge reddish-white crystal rock on the left bank of the Mandakini where Sri Ram and Sita Ji used to rest. When Jayant (son of Indra) pecked at Sita Ji's feet, Ram released an arrow at him — and the rock still bears the footprints of Sri Ram, Sita Ji and Jayant.

About 15 km south of Ramghat in a dense forest, this ashram is dedicated to Maharshi Atri and Sati Anasuya. By her miraculous powers of penance, Sati Anasuya transformed Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva into small babes. She is also believed to have brought down the Mandakini, a streamlet of the Ganges.

Situated at the foot of a hill about 12 km southwest of Chitrakoot, this is an incessant stream flowing between two rocks. Beautiful natural carvings in varied designs enhance the attraction of these mysterious caves. A number of local legends are associated with this extraordinary place.

Near the Bihara village, about 3 km west of Pili Kothi Ashram, a huge rock carries imprints as though made by lying down on a mattress. These are believed to be the resting marks of Sri Ram and Sita Ji during their exile. Beside the two body marks, another mark made by placing the bow is also very clear.

About 100 metres from Ram-Shaiyya and overlooking it, Lakshman used to be on guard here to protect Sri Ram and Sita Ji. This beautiful rock bears a mark resembling the head side of a bed and imprints of Lakshman sitting down with his bow. The Ram-Shaiyya rock is clearly visible from here.

About 4 km east of Ramghat at the beginning of the Vindhyas, a stream of cool clear water originating inside the mountain falls on the idol of Hanuman Ji and loses itself in a kund below. Popular belief holds that Hanuman Ji came here to cool down the heat after burning Lanka.

About 18 km from Chitrakoot on the Allahabad road, the Valmiki Ashram stands on a lofty hill on the bank of the Valmiki river. Sita Ji gave birth to and nursed her sons Kush and Lava here after she was deserted by Sri Ram. Sri Ram, Lakshman and Sita Ji had also passed through this Ashram on their way to Chitrakoot.

About 20 km southeast of Sati Anasuya Ashram, this sacred site has a Ganga-Kund and a Shiva Temple, with 108 Yagya Vedikas at the foot of the hill. Sri Ram accorded darshan to sage Sarbhang here. The saying is that one dip in the Sarbhang Ashram equals repeated bathing in the sacred Ganges.

About 20 km west of Chitrakoot near Bharatpur village, this huge well is where Bharat brought water from all the holy places to anoint Ram as King during his exile. When Ram did not agree, Bharat — at the behest of Maharshi Atri — poured all this holy water into this very well.

A small hillock parallel to Kamadgiri, about halfway in the Parikrama. Lakshman used to guard Sri Ram and Sita Ji from here while they rested on the Kamadgiri. There is a Lakshman Temple and a Lakshman-Stambh here — pilgrims embrace the pillar with the same reverence as if embracing Lakshman Ji himself.

One of the most beautiful and charming sites in Bundelkhand. Ram appeared to Maharshi Sutikshna here in compliance of the latter's desire to have His darshan. A beautiful stream falls from amidst mountains into a kund below. It is a place frequented by many in search of mental peace and spiritual solace.

About 2 km south of Ramghat on the Satna road, a beautiful grove sits on the bank of the Payaswini. A celebrated tree here, known as 'Putra-Jeeva' or 'Putrada,' is visited by childless couples with the desire of being blessed with a son — a popular belief that such visits bring the desired result.

About halfway in the Parikrama Path, this is the reputed site where Bharat and his mothers met Sri Ram, Lakshman and Sita Ji during their exile. It was such a touching occasion that even stones melted owing to overwhelming emotions — and still carry their footprints to this day.

Above the fourth Mukharvind of Kamtanath Ji, there is a small streamlet known as Saryu Dhara. Hanuman Ji is believed to live here, and a popular legend holds that Tulsidas used to recite the Ramayan here every day before him. Devotees feel spiritually charged after resting here a while.

A beautiful spring near the origin of Payaswini — one spring just below another, this fall is unique in the entire country. Said to be more glamorous than even the Dhunwadhar Fall of Bhedaghat. A huge and very deep Mandakini Kund lies below. Discovered by the District Magistrate on July 31st, 1998 and dedicated to the public.

A vast reservoir of water on the Amrawati Ashram road. According to popular belief, this kund reaches down to the Patal Lok. A terrible monster Viradh lived here and was killed by Sri Ram during his exile. Adventure-loving tourists will definitely be attracted to this mysterious and serene site.

About 1 km from Tikariya village, this fall presents a beautiful sight. Walking along the flowing stream on rocks and bathing in it is a unique pleasure. A statue of Vanwasi Hanuman sits on a huge rock here, and an annual fair attended by throngs of local people is held every year.
